WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?
ACUPUNCTURE is a safe, drug free and effective form of Chinese Medicine backed by more than 2000 years of practice and research. It is used worldwide as a primary and complementary treatment for a wide range of conditions.
Acupuncture forms part of a complete medical system known as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
How does it work?
The system is designed to restore health rather than fight disease. It examines and treats the person as a whole, encompassing mind body and spirit, and works by stimulating the body’s own healing response.
The body contains Qi (chee) which is the energy that allows us to think, feel, move and work. This Qi circulates in a system of channels or meridians.
When the flow of Qi becomes unbalanced or blocked through physical, emotional or environmental factors, illness develops. The body’s Qi must be balanced in order for health to be maintained. TCM uses a root and branch approach to treatment dealing with both the symptoms of the illness and, more importantly for long term health, the underlying cause of illness.
Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine sterile needles into specific points on the body to unblock the Qi and ensure a free flow of energy to restore the body back to its normal balance.
What can acupuncture be used for?
The following is a sample of some of the illnesses for which acupuncture can be effective
How many treatments will i need?
This very much depends on your condition, how long it has been present and your response to the treatments. Treatments are usually given weekly. As a general rule, the longer the condition is present the longer it will take to resolve it or control it. Best advice is to therefore come early!
The effects of Acupuncture are cumulative and a minimum of 3-5 treatments is advised in order to identify some improvement. Often relief of symptoms will last longer or be more effective with each treatment. By the nature of Chinese medicine, changes and improvement can be subtle as the body rebalances and begins to heal. Acute conditions can often have a quick response and improvement, the root cause of your illness may then be found and treated if needed.
During the course of treatment many people will notice other changes in their general health such as, improved quality of sleep, improved energy levels, more relaxed and able to deal with daily stresses.
Each case will be discussed on an individual basis, and as far as possible a broad outline of how many treatments you will require will be given.
As mentioned earlier, acupuncture forms only one part of Chinese medicine and within your treatment session some or all of the following treatments may be combined to enhance the effectiveness.
This involves the use of a small electrical current applied to the needles to stimulate them.
This involves the use of glass or bamboo cups placed on the body with suction to regulate the flow of Blood and Qi.
